Certification Program

Training Session Planned for June 11

Please keep in mind that at 12:00 Saturday, June 11, before our regular monthly meeting, there will be a training session on general archaeological principles. This session will be taught by Dr. Donald Janzen. There will be a break before our 2:00 meeting. The training will be held in the library at the Falls of the Ohio State Park where our regular meetings are held. This session will count towards amateur accreditation and should be entered into your logbooks. Certificates will be awarded those who complete the training.

    Field School Opportunities

    We have received the following information from Indiana University:

    We are now inviting applications for the IU Summer Field School in Archaeology, May 10 - June 16, 2005. This six-credit hour course will be held at Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville, IN. This is an exceptional opportunity to participate in research at a site of major regional importance. This project will focus on the excavation of prehistoric domestic features in order to gain insight on social and ecological change in the Ohio River Valley 600-1000 years ago. Class size is limited so early application is strongly encouraged.     National Park Service’s 2005 Archaeological Prospection Workshop

    The National Park Service’s 2005 workshop on archaeological prospection techniques entitled Current Archaeological Prospection Advances for Non-Destructive Investigations in the 21st Century will be held May 16-20, 2005, at the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Chillicothe, Ohio. Lodging will be in Comfort Inn in Chillicothe, Ohio. This will be the fifteenth year of the workshop dedicated to the use of geophysical, aerial photography, and other remote sensing methods as they apply to the identification, evaluation, conservation, and protection of archaeological resources across this Nation. The workshop this year will focus on the theory of operation, methodology, processing, interpretation, and on-hands use of the equipment in the field. Special topic for this year is the introduction of geophysical techniques in archaeological excavations. In addition to the workshop, there will be an equipment fair on Friday (May 20th) with the major geophysical equipment manufacturers attending. There is a tuition charge of $475.00.     Passport in Time

    Passport in Time is a volunteer program of the Forest Service. PIT volunteers work with professional archaeologists and historians on archaeological and historic preservation projects national forests throughout the country. Volunteers can participate on such diverse activities as archaeological survey, excavation, historic structure restoration, analysis, and archival research.     Great Lakes Nat. Amer. Arts & Crafts Workshop

    Saturday, March 05, 2005 Time: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Location: Indiana History Center Cost: $55; $50 IHS and NCGLNAC members

    The National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture (NCGLNAC) and the Indiana Historical Society (IHS) will host a workshop at the Indiana History Center that will explore the arts, crafts and history of Great Lakes Native Americans through hands-on classes and/or presentations by Native American tradition bearers, artisans and experts on Native American culture.
