ELECTED POSITIONS
President

Sundea Murphy

Archaeology and ancient history have been Ms. Murphy's life-long interests. Through the years she have amassed quite a library of arcaheological and historical literature (some rare). Her "favorite" cultures are the Adena, Hopewell, and Mississippian. She has always been a scientist, one way or another. She has worked for almost 20 years for Hoeschst-Celanese. Her last position was Project Leader for developing novel personal care composites, utilizing superabsorbent polymer. Travel became an issue, so she decided to change career paths. She repaired computers for two years, then I became a Technical Trainer for UPS Supply Chain Solutions. She train personnel in any technical courses required, from Electrostatic Discharge Safety to computer software courses to customer repair certifications.

President Elect

Mr. Perry Harrell

Perry has been active in professional archaeology since the early 1970s. He has worked on numerous important archaeological projects over the years, including the excavations at the Old Clarksville Site with Dr. Don Janzen; Carrier Mills in Illinois with Dr. Dick Jefferies; Hovey Lake and Prather sites with Cheryl Munson; and Strawtown with Dr. Bob McCullough. And many more......Perry currently works with AMEC Earth & Environmental in Louisville, and remains active with amateur and volunteer archaeology in the Falls area. He is currently researching Paleoindian finds in Clark County, Indiana.

Treasurer

Tim Darst

Tim Darst, CPA, is a partner in the firm of Buchenberger, Darst & Eggers, LLC, certified public accountants. He is an amateur historian and long time member of the Filson Club and the Louisville Historical League.

Secretary

Christina DeMent

Christina is a young, enthusiastic volunteer with an ambition of becoming an archaeologist. She received a B.A. in Anthropology from Indiana University Southeast. She hopes to go to graduate school and continue her studies. She has worked as an archaeological technician with AMEC Earth & Environmental in Louisville. Christina can always be counted on to help out whenever needed. And moreover, when she joined us, FOAS got three for the price of one! She brought along her parents, Bob and Barbara, who are also great FOAS members and terrific volunteers.

Newsletter Editor

Anne Bader

Anne is a professional archaeologist who has been active in the archaeology of the Falls area since 1971. She received her education at the University of Louisville (B.A., 1974) and the University of Kentucky (M.A. 1992). She was formerly employed as an archaeologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She now works for AMEC Earth & Environmental where she is the program manager for cultural resources compliance services. Anne is the founder of FOAS, and its first President.

Communications Chair

Leslie Rumbley

Leslie Rumbley joined our group in 2002. Having great people skills prompted her to the call of "communications chairman". Her organizational skills in maintaining communication between the members and the officers have been a asset to the Society. Keeping up with the new members and prompting interaction within our Archaeological group has been her first priority. She has had the experience with professional archaeologists Phase I, II, and III investigations. Besides being an avid hunter herself of the ancient American past, she strives to maintain and document all sites and to educate the public on the awareness of good documentation however large or small the sites are.

Editorial Staff

Our current editorial staff consists of Sundea Murphy, Anne Bader, Donald Ball, and Dr. Donald Janzen. To date, Sundea has carried the bulk of the technical editing of Currents of Change, the journal of FOAS, while Anne has screened submitted articles for scientific accuracy and suitability. Anne also provided recommendations regarding layouts. Don and Don have recently been recruited to assist with this monumental task, since both are expert in editing and possess the attention to detail required by this type of work.

Dr. Donald Janzen is a professional archaeologist. He was formerly a professor with Center College in Danville, Kentucky where he lived for many years. He owned a successful archaeological compliance company called Janzen, Inc.. Dr. Don, a Louisville native, received his doctorate from the University of Michigan. He was one of the early researchers active in the Falls area archaeology, and worked on such outstanding sites as the Hornung Mound, the Ferry Landing Site, the Old Clarksville, Site, the Prather Site, the Reid Site, and many others. For some years, he has been active in the study of communal societies across the U.S. He has recently "retired" to Louisville, where he has rekindled his interest in the local archaeology.

Donald Ball is a former archaeologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville, Kentucky District, whre he worked for many years from the mid-1970s through 2004. His interests are varied, as can be seen in his numerous publications. He has provided several articles for the FOAS journal, as well as other regional scientific publications. Don has been for some years the editor of the Proceedings of the Symposium for Historic and Urban Archaeol . He has always had an interest in Historic Archaeology, making valuable contributions to the field. He is also expert in arms-related artifacts. Don has recently joined FOAS, while maintaining actuve involvement with regional archaeologists and professional organizations.

Professional Oversight Committee

In any amateur society, professional oversight is required to assist in guiding the membership and evaluating if a potential project is an appropriate undertaking for the group. FOAS has a three-member professional board, consisting of Anne Bader, Michael French, and Jay Stottman.

Michael French is a professional archaeologist with AMEC Earth & Environmental in Louisville. His education was received at the University of Arkansas and the University of Kentucky. His experience has been largely in the prehistoric arena. His Master's thesis focused on the Archaic occupations of the sites of the southwest Jefferson County floodwall. Mike has most recently been involved with directing a large data recovery project at the fall sof the Ohio in Louisville.

Jay Stottman is a professional archaeologist with the Kentucky Archaeological Survey (KAS). Jay was educated at the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky, where he is currently pursuing his doctorate degree. Jay's primary interest lies in the field of Historical Archaeology, and especially in all aspects of public archaeology. Dedicated to public education, Jay has been active in the Building Blocks program at the Farnsley-Moremen House in southwest Jefferson County, Kentucky, the investigations at the site of old Portland, and many other investigations.
